Activity Description:

 

This activity will afford students the opportunity to listen to various types of music.  By listening to three (3) different genres of music, the students will make an assessment/analysis of how the language of each type of music is used within their genres.  In addition, the students will compare and contrast the music’s certain features, elements, vocabularies, intonations, slangs, hiphop rhythms, and so on.  The students will examine every facet of the language used in the music as compared to other languages in other music.  Upon completing their assessment, the students will type up an essay to reflect their findings.  Ensure sources are well cited using APA style of formal writing. 

 

Standards:  1.a, 3.b, 3.c, 4.a, 6.01, 6.02, 6.03, 6.04, 6.5, 8.01

 

Objectives:     Students will be able to:

 

·        Demonstrate understanding of language as a system

·        Use multimedia resources to access music- Music CD’s, Records, Video recorders, etc.

·        Listen to three (3) different types of music; country, rock & roll, disco, jazz, contemporary music, romance, classical, etc.

·        Evaluate each of the three different music that you have chosen

·        Compare and contrast the various different forms of music

·        Prepare a type written essay of your reflection/assessment of the music that you have chosen.

·        Present your findings to the class.

·        Play your music during presentations to the class.

·        Discuss with the class how language is used in those music.

 

 

Procedures:

 

  1. Access three (3) different types of music through any multimedia sources, Music CD’s, Radio, Prerecorded Cassette Tapes, T.V., etc.
  2. Listen to each type of music.
  3. Examine the language, style, feature, form, intonation, etc.  Look for things in the language or music that seems to be common/uncommon, etc.

 

  1. Prepare a type written essay to be submitted in hard copy form.  Due on the 2nd week.

 

 

  1. Present your findings to the class.

 

 

  1. Play your music to the class

 

 

  1. Discuss, prompt questions/answer session with the class.

 

 

 

Evaluation:              Essay……………………….….15%
