The “Simon Says” Technology Integrated Activity

Total Physical Response (TPR) Approach                                      

Date:  March 14, 2007

 

 

Approach:  This activity is geared to teach fundamental English basics to English as-a-Second Language (ESL) students.  Using a more fundamental approach to teaching English, this activity will use the Total Physical Response (TPR) approach to teaching the target language.  The general objectives of Total Physical Response are to teach oral proficiency at a beginning level.  In addition, this activity will involve the use of a micro-computer to access and complete this activity.

 

 

Activity Description:  The student will access The “Simon Says” Technology Integrated Activity at this website ___________________________.    Upon accessing the website, the student will read and complete the lesson plan.  This activity involves the TPR method built around the coordination of speech and action.  It attempts to teach the target language through physical motor activity. 

 

 

Content Standards:  IRA 1.3, 1.5, 2.3, 2.5, 2.6, 2.13, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.7,

Tesol:  1.a, 3.a, 3.b, 3.c, 4.c

 

 

 Learning Objectives:  The student will be able to:

 

  1. Access the lesson plan through a web quest address using a micro-computer
  2. Follow the procedures in the lesson plan
  3. Orally respond to “Simon Says” prompts
  4. Use physical motor skills with oral response to complete prompts of “Simon Says”
  5. Develop and type in corresponding past tense sentence after oral/motor skills response to “Simon Says” prompts
  6. Save and submit completed past tense sentences to ___________________
  7. Identify types of verbs and to use them in writing
  8. Identify past tense verbs and to use them in writing

 

Activity Start Here: 

 

Procedures:    Read all the instruction below first.  Next, proceed to page 3

 

1.      Pair up with a classmate (you will work together for this activity)

 

2.      Decide who will be Simon (Simon will be using the computer)

 

3.      Decide who will be the Responder (the responder will respond to Simon)

4.      Simon will Access the web quest site _________________________

 

    1. Both of you will read and follow lesson plan titled “Simon Says” Technology Integrated Activity

 

    1. Simon will start the activity by saying Simon Says prompts (one action verb prompts at a time)  (See Oral Sentence Activity)

 

    1. The responder will respond orally by repeating what Simon has said.

 

    1. The responder will physically act out what Simon has just asked you

 

    1. (Responder)—Upon orally saying and acting out what Simon has said, the responder will re-state what they have done in a sentence using the past tense form.

 

    1. Simon will type the past tense sentence in the space provided under each sentence.   

 

 For example:  Simon says, “Touch your head”.  

                        Responder – physically touch your head and then orally say

                                             “Touch your head”

                        (After responder completes the task)

                        Responder – Says to Simon, “I touched my head.”

                        Simon will type the past tense sentence “I touch my head” in

                        the blank space below each sentence accordingly.

 

    1. After completing all ten questions, save and submit to ______________________________

 

    1. After completing the Simon Says Activity, each student will write a reflection of what they think about this activity.  Did you like this activity?  Was there any difficulty in understanding the Simon Says activity?  How did you like working with a micro-computer to access the lesson plan for this activity?  What final comments you would like to add to your reflection of this activity.  Submit a hard copy (Due next week Weds.)

 

 

 

 

Example:    Simon says, “Touch your head.”

                   Responder says, “Touch your head.”

                   Responder will touch his/her head physically

                   Responder re-state what they had just done in a sentence.

                   ----by saying, “I touched my head.”

Oral Sentence Activity

 

1.  Simon says, “Touch your knee.”

 

     Responder responds by first repeating “Touch your knee.”

     Then responder will touch his/her knee. 

     Then responder will say, “I touched my knee.”

2.  Simon says, “Lick your lips.”

Note:  After completing the tasks with your responder, you will both switch positions and begin the exercise again starting from Simon says prompt number one (1) and continuing on up to number ten (10).

 

Don’t forget to each write your own reflection paper of what you think about this assignment due in class in hard copy format.
